Jewish Baby Names

Searching for the perfect baby name is not an easy task for any parent and with today’s “trend” to give children unique and interesting names, this task isn’t any easier. They often look for something meaningful, for something with a strong and also deep message. Even more so for Jewish parents, as Jews are renowned for their strength of character and spirituality. Let’s see what some of the most popular Jewish baby names are and what they mean.

There is a wide variety of beautiful Jewish baby names parents can choose from. A simple lookup on the Internet can dish out hundreds of results that you can choose from. Let’s start with a few examples of interesting, somewhat unique and meaningful Jewish baby names:

Shlomo is a Jewish baby name that means ‘wise and peaceful’. The name actually comes from Solomon, the wise biblical king.

Another interesting Jewish baby name is Yehuda, which means ‘the praised one’. This particular name got included in the English language, but in a slightly different form: Judd or Jude. Shayna or Shaina as an alternative name is a Jewish baby girl’s name, meaning “beautiful”. Besides having a fitting meaning for a baby, the name sounds mysterious and fascinating as well.

Few people know this, but one of the most popular names in English, Michael, is actually Jewish in origins. Michael has different forms in hundreds of languages and it is pronounced differently in every part of the world, but that doesn’t deny its Jewish roots. Michael means ‘messenger of God’.

Meir is an interesting Jewish name as well and its meaning in Jewish is ‘light’. A similar word that could translate to “light” is Zothar, which is less used than Meir though. Beniamin or Benjamin is a common name frequently heard in different languages coming from different cultures. Although it is a common and usual name it still has a Jewish origin and the meaning of the name is, in loose translation, ‘son of my right hand’.

Parents can also choose some beautiful Jewish baby names for their little girls, as they can choose from several meaningful ones. Sarah is quite popular these days in most languages (although it may vary in pronunciation or spelling) and few people know that this biblical name is actually Jewish in origin. It’s even more meaningful to the Jewish people, as the character Sarah saved the Jews from annihilation in one of the Bible’s passages.

Despite the fact that most Jewish baby names have a biblical meaning, there are a few that have regular ones and are frequently used. Kalanit for example is a Jewish girl’s name and it means ‘flower’. It may be a bit “rough” to pronounce but it is a widely used one regardless. Another “flower” name with arguable origins in the Jewish culture is Yasmine, or Jasmine.

The name Miriam appears in the Bible as Moses’ sister and she is a prophetess and artist at the same time, so the name might appeal to parents who want to give their little girl the name of a strong, yet sensitive person.

To conclude, the above mentioned ones are just a fraction of the stretching list of beautiful Jewish baby names. As a parent, you will have to take your time and browse around and decide, together with your spouse, whether you want a biblical or a more casual Jewish name for your little one.
